Some beautiful music has been uncovered this fortnight, and, from a tangential perspective, we can really hear the lineage of galactic funk, soul and psychedelia within tracks like Computa Love by B Bravo and Space Love by Cohoba, and the selections from Gonjasufi's new album. Special mention goes to Harrison Blakoldman who hooked me up with a bunch of unreleased tracks from his collection, and dem hunger, who's collage music cassette "Caveman Smack" has been keeping me intrigued for weeks. Welcome back listeners after a fair few months break. I've been gallivanting around the planet getting up to all kinds of mischief, and now I am going to try and make up for lost time by packing a bunch of amazing tracks into this episode. Special mentions include "Ill Gates" (aka the Phat Conducta), Sydney-sider M.O.R. from his latest album Masters of Ribongia, a sneak preview track from Shafiq Husayn's new album set for release October 6th and a glorious jam by Dam Funk from Toeachizown Vol 3: Life.

Even though there is a crapload of great new releases which we touch on for the first part of the podcast I can't help but go back a bit and play you some really really old school tracks, possibly because there is a fair few tracks in this podcast that SOUND like they could have been written in the early sixties. Artists like the Gas Lamp Killer, Poets of Rhythm, the Phenomenal Handclap Band, and the Heliocentrics have been so incredibly influenced by the psych, soul and funk era, so we just have to pay some serious homage to some o/g's: Ike and Tina Turner, the Fibonnacis, Durutti Column and Eddie Kendricks, the latter who clearly inspired Erykah Badu with the track "My People....Hold on". Now that I have heard the original, I can't work out which version I like better. They are both so great, which I guess is a sign of the times.

Blown away again this week the quality of music coming out of the underground hip hop and hybridised dubstep arenas. We serve up some newbies by Mux Mool, Jamie Vex'd, Dem Hunger and a collaboration by Burial & Fourtet. Particularly impressed with the latest album by Gonja Sufi, the mystical unveiling of the Cleptoclectics latest offering titled "Open Tuned Occidentals" and another Sydney artist, Monk Fly's dance floor stomper "Streetisms Vol.1"

Meanwhile the Red Bull Music Academy is doing its thing again this year across the world. 2009 may be full of surprises so far, but the real surprise for me so far this year is the amount of great music that has been released. Only a month into 2009 and already I have unearthed some fantastic music. It may have slipped past a lot of ears but Plaid released a new album late last year called Heaven's Door, serving up their fine blend of textural and melodic goodness. Also featured this fortnight is Lukid with a couple of tracks from his second album, Foma. We also hear a selection of artists from the abstract hip hop label All City. The locals haven't disappointed either, with a new track from the debut album by M.O.R. and Faux Pas delights again with his new Waterfalls EP, a delicious psychedelic treat that you can go and download yourself from his website. We feature a brand new and exclusive track from the upcoming Dorian Concept album, and we Aussies are lucky enough to be getting a live dose of his abstract future funk this coming month. Listen out for his track, the one with the out-of-this-world keyboard skills.

This fortnight was a bit late coming but in my humble opinion well worth the wait. Featuring the artist Kelpe, we play a couple of tracks from his album Ex-Aquarium, an album that blew me away in length and depth, well worth a listen. As well as new releases from Red Snapper, Squarepusher, King Midas Sound, and Aussie dubstep pioneer, Westernsynthetics who has a brand new 12 inch out that is a must to hear.

We also dig a bit deeper this week to uncover tracks from To Rococo Rot, Sunken Foal, Jazzanova, and Batteaux that have made quite an impression on this tangent chaser.

Featuring new and unreleased material from local artist Dizz1 who is living it up at the Red Bull Music Academy Barcelona edition this week. We have newbies from Fourtet, Thievery Corporation, Radioactiveman and Roots Manuva, as well as a pick from the most strange and psychedelic new album from Amorphous Androgynous. The real gem in the mix this week is an old crackly number from Joe R. Lewis, techno genius, with his track Acid Falls. We get a bit funky towards the middle of the mix and a bit dubby towards the end, a bit like a good night out. No doubt there will be lots of those happening over the next week. A tantalising array of musical gifts for you all this week, with brand newbies from Madlib, B12, and a sneak preview track courtesy of Red Bull Music Academy from Om'mas Keith. Over the next month we will be showcasing the music from some of the participants who are lucky enough to be attending this years Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona. This week it is Noel from the Dominican Republic. Chasing the tangent has diversified this fortnight, attempting to mix up a large number of different genres into the one show. But somehow there is some vague thread running through all of it. What could it be? Perhaps it's just that inexplicable ingredient that defines what this show is all about. This fortnights tangent chasing has uncovered a ridiculous amount of amazing music. Big thanks to Butter Beats in Brisbane for playing host to the gracious Ty and myself last week, while we trawled through shelves and boxes of vinyl. This week we hear from Australian group The Swiss (SA), brand new one from Portishead's upcoming album 'Third' and from the debut album by The Magnolia Corporation (NZ). We get treated to a couple of house champions, Mike Grant and Kenny Dixon Jr, and jazz it up a bit with Colossus and Ty featuring Taylor McFerrin. Some beautiful ambient pieces finish the mix from Tetsu Inoue and Laurie Anderson.

Chasing the Tangent is traipsing around Australia this month so it only seems fitting to include a bumper crop of Australian content this week, with brand new mind blowing unreleased tracks from Soul Mirage (Melb), Ed Seven (Syd) and Material Object (Syd).
